The impact player rule and higher lines
Under the impact player rule, each side can bring in a substitute during the match who is allowed to bat or bowl. In practice that usually means an extra batter or an extra bowler depending on the situation, so line-ups are deeper than the old eleven.
The effect on the markets is easy to see once you look for it. With more batting to come, top-order players take more risk, and the panel's opening lines for 6-over sessions and full-innings totals tend to be set with that in mind. The bigger lesson is in-play: an early wicket or two used to push a batting side's price out sharply and drop the lambi line hard. With deeper batting, the recovery is more often real. Dew, the toss and evening games
Most IPL games start in the evening. As the night goes on, dew settles on the outfield, the ball gets wet and slippery, and spinners in particular find it harder to grip. That usually makes the second innings easier to bat in.
- At the toss: captains in night games often choose to bowl first. The match-odds price moves as soon as the toss and decision are known, sometimes noticeably.
- Second-innings sessions: lines in the chase can be set higher than you might expect from the first innings, because the market is pricing the dew.
- Afternoon games: on double-header days the earlier match usually has little or no dew, so the chasing advantage is weaker. Do not apply the night-game habit to a day game.

The powerplay session
The first six overs, with only two fielders allowed outside the circle, decide the most-traded session line in an IPL match. It is also the one that moves the most in the first few balls. A couple of boundaries off the first over and the line jumps; a swinging new ball and a maiden and it falls.
What we noticed from players' bet lists during the season: the 6-over session drew far more impulsive bets than any other market, often placed between deliveries after a single big shot. Venue patterns, in general terms
IPL grounds are very different from each other, and the panel's lines reflect that. Without quoting averages, these are the general factors behind the differences:
- Boundary size. Smaller grounds, or grounds with one short side, give more boundaries and higher lines.
- Surface. Flat, hard pitches with true bounce favour batting; slower, drier ones bring spinners in and pull totals down.
- Altitude and outfield. The ball travels further in thinner air, and a fast outfield turns mistimed shots into boundaries.
- Wear through the season. Pitches used for several games can get slower later in the tournament, so early-season scoring at a ground is a poor guide to the last few matches there.
How IPL prices behave compared with other cricket

- Budget for the tournament, not the day. An IPL season runs for roughly two months. Set one total, decide how many matches you will bet on, and divide.
- Pick your matches. Betting every game, often two a day, is the fastest way through a budget. Choose games where you have actually followed the teams and conditions.
